English Pronunciation for Russian Speakers: 7 Sound Fixes
ESL Pronunciation • QuickPronounce Team • 9 min read • August 21, 2026
Russian gives speakers strong consonants and clear vowels, but hides three traps in English: the w/v swap, dental-alveolar mixing, and automatic final devoicing. Fix those plus the th sounds and your clarity jumps.
The Seven Sound Fixes
Each fix targets a sound English uses that Russian does not, or uses differently. Work through one sound per day rather than all seven at once.
/w/ vs /v/
The mistake: “west” becomes “vest”; Russian has only v.
The fix: /w/ rounds both lips with nothing touching; /v/ touches teeth to lip with buzz. Pairs: west-vest, wine-vine, worse-verse, soon-sworn.
Practise with: west, work, away, twenty
/θ/ and /ð/
The mistake: “think” becomes “sink/fink”; “this” becomes “zis/dis”.
The fix: Flat tongue tip against the upper teeth edges with steady air. Slide forward from /s/ until you feel teeth. Pairs: thank-sank, day-they.
Practise with: think, third, this, other
Final devoicing
The mistake: “bag” rhymes with “back”; “have” sounds like “half”.
The fix: Carry voice through the last consonant: hum into the ending. Throat test: buzz = b/g/d/v/z; no buzz = p/k/t/f/s. Sets: bag-back, prove-proof, eyes-ice.
Practise with: bag, have, eyes, good
/h/ vs /x/
The mistake: Throaty Russian х replaces h: “hot” sounds scraped.
The fix: English h is pure gentle breath with no friction. Fog-a-mirror exercise: ha, he, hot, behind. Never let the throat close.
Practise with: hot, home, behind, perhaps
/æ/
The mistake: “bad” becomes “bed”; Russian has no /æ/ vowel.
The fix: Drop the jaw noticeably and keep the tongue front-low, lips relaxed-neutral. Triplets: bad-bed, sat-set, man-men.
Practise with: bad, plan, family, happen
/ɪ/ vs /iː/
The mistake: “live” and “leave” merge into one vowel.
The fix: /ɪ/: half-beat, loose jaw. /iː/: two beats, wide smile. Overdo length first, then fix position: bit-beat, fill-feel, still-steal.
Practise with: big, this, meet, leave
Aspiration of p/t/k
The mistake: Unaspirated stops make “park” sound like “bark” to native ears.
The fix: Add a puff after initial p/t/k before vowels. Tissue test: paper should flutter. Drill: paper, town, come, pocket.
Practise with: park, time, come, pocket
Daily Drill
Every morning: “WHEN the WEATHER is WARM we WORK in the WEST GARDEN. THAT BAG of FOOD is VERY GOOD.” Verify aspiration with a tissue and final voicing with a hand on the throat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my “bag” sound like “back”?
Russian automatically devoices final consonants. English keeps them voiced, and that voicing distinguishes words (bag/back, eyes/ice). Carry throat buzz into the ending.
Should I fix vowels or consonants first?
Consonants first: w/v, th, final voicing cause instant word confusions. Vowel polish (/æ/, /ɪ/) comes second and mainly affects how natural you sound.
