English Pronunciation for Vietnamese Speakers: 7 Sound Fixes

ESL Pronunciation • QuickPronounce Team • 9 min read • August 21, 2026

Vietnamese syllables are short, tonal, and rarely end in released consonants, while English words end hard and stretch across many sounds. These seven fixes target exactly that gap.

The Seven Sound Fixes

Each fix targets a sound English uses that Vietnamese does not, or uses differently. Work through one sound per day rather than all seven at once.

Final consonant releases

The mistake: Endings are glottal-stopped: “cat” becomes “ca'”, “book” becomes “boo'”.

The fix: Release or at least complete final contacts: tongue reaches K-position, lips close for B/P. Practice: tap-book-cat said slowly with firm endings.

Practise with: cat, book, about, first

/θ/ and /ð/

The mistake: “think” becomes “tink” or “fink”; “they” becomes “dey”.

The fix: Tongue tip between or at the teeth edges, blowing gently. Slide from t forward until teeth touch. Pairs: tin-thin, day-they.

Practise with: think, three, this, mother

/ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/

The mistake: Southern Vietnamese merges s/sh, so “she” equals “sea”; “job” can become “yob”.

The fix: Retract and round for /ʃ/: sip-ship contrast. Build /dʒ/ from d plus zh friction: j-ar, job, bridge, change.

Practise with: she, shop, job, village

/z/ vs /j/

The mistake: Southern Vietnamese turns z into y: “zebra” becomes “yebra”.

The fix: Buzz with tongue grooved near the ridge, no lip glide involved. From /dʒ/, drop the stop: zzzip. Pairs: yet-zet, yacht-jot-zot.

Practise with: zebra, music, busy, eyes

Consonant clusters

The mistake: Schwa splits clusters: “spring” becomes “sa-pring”, “student” becomes “sa-tudent”.

The fix: One breath per cluster; whisper first, then voice without inserting vowels: spring, student, friend, blue.

Practise with: spring, student, friend, explain

Tone-to-stress transfer

The mistake: Each English word keeps a Vietnamese tone contour, making speech sound melodic in the wrong places.

The fix: Replace per-syllable pitch with one stressed syllable per word and falling intonation per statement. Clap stress: TA-ble, com-FOR-ta-ble.

Practise with: table, comfortable, information, development

/v/ stability

The mistake: Some regions alternate v with y: “very” becomes “yery”.

The fix: Fix teeth-on-lip contact and hold it while buzzing: vvv-ery. Pairs: very-berry-merry, vote-note.

Practise with: very, visit, seven, love

Daily Drill

Daily two-step: (1) clap the stress pattern of ten words, (2) read “THREE STUDENTS SPRING across the STREET to SEE the SHOP” with complete, audible final consonants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Vietnamese tones ruin English pronunciation?

They do not ruin it, but they misplace melody. English stresses one syllable per word and melodies span whole sentences. Shifting pitch control from syllables to sentences is the core fix.

Which error should I fix first?

Final consonants: they occur in nearly every sentence and their absence cuts intelligibility the most. Stress placement is the close second.
